The Behavioural Scientist’s Guide to Fuelling Creativity

Creativity, or being creative, is defined as the process of using our imaginations, experiences, and original ideas to invent something novel and fresh. Many people wouldn’t label themselves as creative. Yet creativity is a skill that can be nurtured and developed, and is useful in a multitude of capacities. In some industries, creativity defines success or failure. An obvious example of this is advertising.

Recently, behavioural scientists have been exploring creativity. They’ve been asking the question:

How can we help fuel individual creativity to create more innovative environments and generate amazing new ideas?

This question – in part – can be answered by four core insights from behavioural science. These insights, and more, are covered in more detail in The Behavioural Scientist’s Guide to Fuelling Creativity. This report identifies powerful ways to encourage creative thinking, and foster a creative environment. Above all, it helps people understand that everyone can be creative!

1.Use Subconscious Priming to Maximise Creativity

Often, we try to dive straight into ‘being creative’. This can be via a brainstorming meeting, trying to write an article, or any other creative pursuit! But this doesn’t give our subconscious mind enough time to ideate and generate the best outputs. To be more creative, you need to prime yourself in advance, and get ready for a productive session!

2. Diversity Trumps Expertise

Would you prefer to collaborate with a team of experts, or a diverse team with a variety of backgrounds? It’s said that “some knowledge is good, but too much knowledge can impair flexibility”. However, this doesn’t mean expertise is obsolete. Balancing expertise and diversity is key to creative thinking and innovation.

3. Use Challenge and Debate to Maximize Quality

Research challenges the idea that you should refrain from being critical in creative brainstorming sessions. However, encouraging debate can be beneficial. But only if encouraged in a constructive way.

4. The Role of Sleep

Getting enough sleep is important to our daily lives. However, did you know sleep can directly impact creative ability? Furthermore, different types of sleep can have different impacts.
